About this place
Floating Sauna Lake Derby offers a wood-fired sauna and a lake dip near Derby in north-east Tasmania. The pontoon sits on a former tin-mining lake, with blackwood and myrtle forest close by. Clad in locally milled Tasmanian oak and Western red cedar, the pontoon sauna is heated by a wood-burning stove scented with pure Tasmanian Kunzea, blue-gum eucalyptus, and Huon pine essential oils distilled on the island.
Between fifteen-minute rounds in the timber steam room, guests step directly off the deck to dip into the lake water ranging from six degrees in winter to eighteen degrees in summer.
After bathing, visitors can rinse with Tasmanian botanical washes described by the maker as biodegradable and suitable for greywater. The lake is part of the Ringarooma catchment, so it is worth checking what products are allowed on site. Book a shared session after a ride on the Blue Tier trails or ask about a private twilight slot. Sessions run year-round, including the cooler months, welcoming solo bathers, mountain bikers, and slow-travel explorers alike.
